‘Supporting organisations in doing good, better. So that they can thrive and make real change happen.’

With twenty years of Civil Society and Philanthropy experience I support Civil Society, Philanthropy, Companies and Governments that work towards progressive change.

Realising change that truly matters to people and our planet requires walking a long road from the moment that ideas are born to results to show. Organisations working to change the world operate in often challenging environments and complex ecosystems. Whilst they might have a clear purpose, competing needs and expectations are met with limited resources and new challenges time after time. Throughout my career I have learned that a thriving civil society not only needs resources, but also requires care and attention to organisational development and staff wellbeing.

Support

It is my job to support change-makers in making sense of complexity, getting comfortable with change and to deliver the results that bring them closer to the world that they want to see. Through hands-on support I help teams to zoom out from the moment, to get unstuck and to make the right decisions. I support organisations with designing and implementing strategies and actions that lead to real change and figuring out the processes that support them well on their journey forward.

How can I support you?

As a consultant, I focus on supporting teams to become clear about their work and its direction, as well as creating stronger organisational practices, internal processes and workflows. I do this through strategy development, interim management of programs and teams, and facilitation of organisational processes. I can also help with ecosystem and field mapping to inform your strategies.

What roles I could take

Depending on your needs, I can take on a specific role or a combination of roles. Each situation asks for a different approach.

Thought partner

Thinking through issues like strategy development or organisational design can be a challenging task. I can assist by seeing civil society and its work in different ways and help identify forward looking perspectives that allow for in- and out-the-box solutions.

Most plans or partnerships are doomed to fail without ownership of those who are concerned by a new strategy or those who need to do the work. I facilitate processes that not only create buy-in, but lead to better results as more perspectives are brought in. Whether this is about facilitating a team retreat, a network meeting, a strategy session or a larger event, I can help.

Oftentimes organisations need practical support to get that project back on track, or someone who can work with a team to develop processes to support that work. This can be developing an approach to regranting, or organising a series of consultations. I have years of experience doing such things successfully. If this is what you need, then I will roll-up my sleeves and get my hands (and nails) gracefully dirty.

If you need temporary management support, then I can jump in to help. For instance to cover for someone on leave. With over 15 years of management experience, I grasp the context quickly and can support teams in moving forward and getting the most out of its people.

Finally, I love team-work and have an extensive network of consultants with years of experience that I love to collaborate with if the job asks for that. Whether you need civil society leaders, grantmakers, advocates, communication experts, researchers and more – I can help build a team at scale for time-bound projects. Many of these people have been my client before, as I often contracted for consultants in my previous roles.

My ways of work

Throughout my engagement with you, expect many questions

Most of the time working with you I will be listening, so that I can make true sense of the situation at stake. I love asking questions, particularly the uncomfortable ones or to colleagues who normally stay silent.

Expect me to do extensive desk- and if need be, field research to inform my work.

Learning is the norm

Whilst as being Dutch I carry an innate directness, I am actually better known for my empathy and listening skills. Creating space is the first step towards unlocking things that are stuck. The second step is establishing a climate where learning is not just accepted, but the norm. I believe that the best solutions are born in rooms where people can speak freely.

Care about accountability

As a long-term civil society activist I care about accountability. For social change to matter, we need to be clear on whose behalf we are speaking. This is as important as it is to be clear about where we are heading. Once there is agreement on the direction, we need to make sure to stay on track.

Working together with others

Change comes when we work together with others. This is true for me as consultant, as I cannot do my work alone. But it is also true for civil society organisations. I believe that we are at our best when we can have open conversations about our successes and learning. It creates trust and solidarity.

Working in complexity

I love working in complexity: finding your way out a maze is only possible if you first allow yourself to get lost. Becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable allows for a more interesting journey and for more learning. Solutions will arise when we ask the right questions and make place for creative thinking.

Have fun

Last but not least: working on social change can be fun, too! Wellbeing has rightly become a critical ingredient to the mix that our work is. For me an important part of this work is to make sure that we laugh.

About me

Since the early 2000s I have worked in and with Civil Society across the globe. In my earlier years I advocated for LGBTI rights at the United Nations and the European Union, after which I led a programs team that worked to fund and build the capacities of LGBTI organisations across Europe and Central Asia.

Recently

In recent years I worked as manager and director in philanthropy, where I worked as grantmaker and oversaw the implementation of an extensive capacity building program towards civil society groups working on democracy, human rights and climate globally.

When I’m not working

After having lived abroad in Brussels and Berlin for 12.5 years, I am excited to call Amsterdam home again. In my free time I love hiking, yoga, reading and travel. My partner José and I love talking about life and spending time with our friends and family.
